As you may have already experienced, the IRS tends to exercise its own special brand of intimidation, and its agents can be downright bullying when making demands on you, the taxpayer.  On the other hand, they tend to be less forceful and more reasonable when they must address themselves to a Professional Representative, such as an Attorney or Enrolled Agent who understands the nuances of the IRS Code pertaining to Taxpayer's Rights.

A good tax professional will be comfortable dealing with the ins and outs of the IRS bureaucracy, while still maintaining allegiance to the client.  A lot of Tax Resolution firms like to make a big deal about having (or being) ex-IRS agents. Their assumption, apparently, is that after a long career of intimidating taxpayers they are now uniquely blessed with the ability to defend them.  But old habits die hard, don't they?  A good Representative will be tough with the IRS, but patient enough to truly listen to the concerns of their client.  They will know all of the right questions to ask you, but they will also know how to present your case to the IRS without antagonism, so that you can get the relief you deserve.
