What is Tax Resolution?

Tax Resolution is a term that describes any of several methods used to help people who have fallen behind in paying their taxes. Although government taxation agencies such as the IRS expect to be paid and will always pursue a debtor in order to retrieve the money they believe is owed, they also understand that many of those whom they are after do not, and likely will not, have the available funds to pay off their debts. Thankfully, there are several options for Tax Resolution sanctioned by the IRS Code, so that most taxpayers will be in a position to take advantage of one or more of them.

Sometimes a tax will have been unfairly assessed either because of bad information or due to an IRS error, and in such a case Tax Resolution is a matter of contesting the amount and proving that it is in fact not owed.  More frequently however, the taxpayer realizes that they do owe what is claimed, but they simply don’t have the money to pay it off.  Luckily, in these situations the IRS or State agency is often willing to accept a smaller settlement, with the rationale that it is a huge waste of their resources to be chasing after a person for years and years.

More than 20 million Americans are in arrears with the IRS, representing billions of dollars in unpaid tax liabilities and penalties – clearly, tax debt has become a considerable problem in our country. And with Congress now stepping up pressure on the IRS to collect these funds, the public’s need for Tax Resolution is becoming ever-greater.  Sadly though, too many of the people who are in a position to benefit from this assistance exercise a strategy of Avoidance, ignoring long-run consequences and succeeding only in compounding their problems.

If you are struggling with a tax debt, you should not feel ashamed or afraid – people get into tax trouble for all kinds of reasons; it may have been the result of poor planning, a difficult personal situation, or circumstances beyond your control.  However, you DO need to actively seek a solution to the problem.  And that’s what Tax Resolution is all about.
